O'Brien goes missing on the colony of New Sydney while searching for Morica Bilby, the widow of a member of the Orion Syndicate. Ezri Dax is sent to find him, which means returning home for the first time in years. Her family runs a pergium mining business there, headed by her overbearing mother Yanas, and Ezri is reunited with her brothers Norvo and Janel. The local police soon deliver O'Brien safely, but he believes the Syndicate murdered Morica and will not let it go. Digging into financial records, he discovers that Morica was on the Tigan family's payroll. Janel admits the family had been paying her in connection with debts to the Syndicate, and then Norvo confesses that he killed Morica when she tried to extort them. Norvo faces a long prison sentence, and a shaken Yanas asks Ezri whether she is to blame. Ezri gives her no answer.
