Months after leaving Deep Space Nine, Sisko is on Earth with his father when a vision from the Prophets shows him a woman's face. Joseph reveals a family secret: the woman is Sarah, Sisko's biological mother, whom he never knew. Among her belongings Sisko finds a necklace inscribed “Orb of the Emissary”, which points him to the planet Tyree. Before he can leave, a Pah-wraith cultist attacks him. On the station, newly promoted Colonel Kira deals with Romulan Senator Cretak, who sets up a hospital on the Bajoran moon Derna, until Kira discovers that the Romulans are also installing weapons there. Meanwhile Worf, grieving and convinced that Jadzia needs a glorious deed in her name to enter Sto-Vo-Kor, recruits O'Brien and Bashir for a dangerous Klingon mission. As Sisko prepares to set out for Tyree, the episode closes with a surprise arrival: Ensign Ezri Dax, the symbiont's new host.
