One evening Bashir treats O'Brien's dislocated shoulder. The next morning Deputy Director Luther Sloan of Starfleet Internal Affairs arrives to investigate a possible security leak among the senior officers. His questioning soon centres on Bashir, whose time as a Dominion prisoner makes him a suspect. Despite Sisko's support, Sloan builds a case that Bashir was turned while in captivity and has him confined. Bashir is then apparently rescued by the Dominion and taken to Weyoun, who tells him he has been their agent all along. Bashir realises O'Brien's shoulder has healed too quickly and works out he has been inside a holosuite all along. Sloan reveals he works for Section 31, a secret organisation that protects the Federation by any means, and invites Bashir to join. Bashir refuses, but Starfleet will neither confirm nor deny that it exists.

DID YOU KNOW?

  1. 01The episode introduces Section 31, which later featured in Enterprise, the film Star Trek Into Darkness and Discovery.
  2. 02Apart from the final scene, almost the entire episode takes place inside a holographic simulation.
  3. 03It has no B-story, because every other character is a hologram and cutting away from Bashir would give the game away.
