On what would have been her late mother's birthday, Dukat contacts Kira and claims that her mother, Meru, was his mistress. Unable to accept it, Kira uses the Orb of Time to travel back to the Occupation. Posing as a fellow refugee, she befriends Meru in a Bajoran camp, but both women are taken to Terok Nor as comfort women for the Cardassian officers. Dukat chooses Meru, and Kira is horrified to see her mother come to care for him in exchange for food and medicine sent to her family. Kira joins the resistance and plans to assassinate Dukat with a bomb in his quarters. Then she learns from her father that Meru's sacrifice kept her husband and children alive. Kira warns Meru and saves her and Dukat. Returning to the present, she accepts that, whatever her mother did, she was still her mother.
- 01The title comes from Percy Bysshe Shelley's 1820 verse drama Prometheus Unbound.
