A scientific experiment shrinks Dax, O'Brien and Bashir to a few centimetres tall, runabout and all, just as the Jem'Hadar attack the Defiant.

The Defiant is studying an unusual subspace compression anomaly, and Dax, O'Brien and Bashir take the runabout Rubicon inside it. They shrink to a few centimetres tall. Before they can return, Jem'Hadar ships attack and seize the Defiant. Their commander, Kudak'Etan, clashes with his second-in-command over tactics while forcing Sisko's captured crew to repair the damaged warp drive. Kira stalls the repairs while Sisko, Worf and Nog plan to retake the ship. The tiny Rubicon slips back aboard through a plasma vent, and O'Brien and Bashir beam into a computer junction to unlock the security codes. With the runabout firing on the Jem'Hadar in engineering and the crew breaking free, the Defiant is recaptured. The Rubicon then re-enters the anomaly and returns to normal size.
- 01René Echevarria first pitched the shrinking-runabout idea during The Next Generation, and it was turned down more than once before finally being made.
- 02It was filmed before “Far Beyond the Stars” but aired afterwards because of its heavy post-production work.
- 03The episode was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series.
