General Martok is ordered to find the B'Moth, a Klingon ship that has gone missing, and takes command of the Bird-of-Prey Rotarran with Worf as his first officer and Dax as science officer. The crew is demoralised after a long string of defeats by the Jem'Hadar, and discipline is slipping. Martok only makes things worse: he is hesitant and overly cautious, letting chances to fight slip by. As tempers fray, Dax urges Worf to act. When the B'Moth is found inside Cardassian space and Martok refuses to cross the border to rescue its crew, fearing an ambush, Worf challenges him. In the knife duel that follows, Worf deliberately lets Martok win, restoring his confidence. Revitalised, the crew defeats a Jem'Hadar ship, rescues the B'Moth's survivors and returns in triumph. Martok then invites Worf to join his House.

  1. 01The Klingon warriors' anthem sung aboard the Rotarran originated in the Star Trek: Klingon CD-ROM game.
  2. 02Ronald D. Moore first pitched a journey to Gre'thor, the Klingon underworld. The idea later became his Voyager script “Barge of the Dead”.
  3. 03No stardate is given. Instead, Worf records a combat log dated by the Klingon calendar, in the year of Kahless 999.
