Without his business licence, Quark returns home to Ferenginar and discovers that his mother Ishka is romantically involved with Grand Nagus Zek. Liquidator Brunt offers to restore Quark's licence if he breaks the couple up, and Quark succeeds. As Zek's new First Clerk, Quark realises the ageing Nagus's memory is failing and his decisions are damaging the Ferengi economy. Ishka confesses she has been quietly guiding Zek all along. Brunt's real plan is to disgrace Zek and take his place. Using Ishka's advice, Quark rescues Zek's reputation, reunites the couple and keeps his licence. On Deep Space Nine, Rom and Leeta's engagement falls apart over a traditional Ferengi marriage contract, until Rom gives his savings to charity and the wedding is back on.
