Dr Lewis Zimmerman, creator of the Emergency Medical Hologram, chooses Bashir as the template for a new long-term medical hologram. To capture his personality, Zimmerman interviews Julian's friends and his parents, Richard and Amsha, with whom he has a strained relationship. Zimmerman also pursues Leeta, which finally pushes a jealous Rom to declare his feelings for her. Talking to the hologram, Bashir's parents let slip the truth: as a young child Julian struggled to learn, and they had him illegally genetically enhanced. Since enhanced people are barred from serving in Starfleet, Bashir expects to lose everything. His father makes a deal instead: Richard pleads guilty and accepts two years in a minimum-security prison, and Julian keeps his commission. Leeta turns down Zimmerman and stays on the station with Rom.
