An away team led by Sisko is investigating a Gamma Quadrant planet when they find a crashed Dominion warship. Before they can explore it, another Dominion ship arrives, destroys their runabout and lands Jem'Hadar soldiers, and the team takes shelter inside the wreck. The Vorta in charge, Kilana, offers to let them go if they surrender the vessel, but her eagerness convinces Sisko that something valuable is on board. As the siege drags on, crewman Muñiz is badly hurt, and tensions flare between O'Brien and Worf over how to handle the situation. Muñiz dies of his injuries. The hidden cargo turns out to be a dying Founder, a god to the Dominion. When it dies, Kilana's Jem'Hadar take their own lives, leaving her powerless to stop the salvage. The Defiant brings the ship back to Deep Space Nine, a major prize for Starfleet, but Sisko reflects bitterly on the five lives it cost.
