Pursuing renegade Jem'Hadar into the Gamma Quadrant, the Defiant rescues survivors from a disabled Dominion warship. Among them is Weyoun, a Vorta, who reveals that the renegades plan to restore an ancient Iconian gateway, a device that allows instant travel across enormous distances. With that kind of power at stake, Sisko agrees to an uneasy alliance: his crew will join Weyoun and a squad of loyal Jem'Hadar, led by their First, Omet'iklan, to destroy the gateway. The partnership is tense from the start, with two very different fighting cultures forced to trust each other on a dangerous mission. In the battle at the gateway Sisko saves Omet'iklan's life, and together the teams succeed in destroying the device. Afterwards, Omet'iklan kills Weyoun for having questioned the loyalty of his men, then departs to hunt down the remaining renegades, leaving Sisko with a sobering glimpse of how the Dominion's soldiers think.
- 01Jeffrey Combs's first appearance as Weyoun. The writers liked his performance so much that they brought the character back, establishing that the Vorta are clones.
- 02The Iconian gateways were first introduced in The Next Generation's “Contagion”, and Worf refers to his part in those events.
- 03It was filmed after “The Quickening” but aired before it.
