The Mirror Universe Jennifer Sisko, double of Sisko's late wife, arrives on the station and spends time with Jake, then takes him back with her to her own universe. Sisko follows, and discovers that his son was bait. The Terran rebels have captured Terok Nor and are holding the Intendant prisoner, and they need Sisko's help to finish their own version of the Defiant before the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance strikes back. Sisko agrees, while Jake grows close to the mother he lost. The Alliance fleet arrives, led by the Regent, the Mirror Universe's Worf. Commanding the new Defiant, Sisko helps the rebels win the battle and forces the Regent to retreat. But the Intendant escapes, killing Nog and Jennifer as she goes, and Sisko and Jake return home to grieve Jennifer all over again.
