A Trill science team comes to the station to attempt the creation of an artificial wormhole, led by Dr Lenara Kahn. In previous lifetimes, the symbionts of Lenara and Jadzia Dax were husband and wife, and Trill custom strictly forbids joined Trill from resuming relationships from earlier hosts. Anyone who breaks the taboo faces exile from Trill society. Jadzia and Lenara try to keep a professional distance, but as they work together aboard the Defiant the old feelings return, and they share a kiss. When an experiment goes wrong and Lenara is injured, Jadzia risks her own life to rescue her, ready to accept exile for the woman she loves. Lenara, however, cannot bring herself to pay that price. She leaves with her team, ending the relationship before it can begin again and leaving Jadzia heartbroken.
- 01Ronald D. Moore suggested changing Kahn from a man to a woman, turning the Trill taboo into an allegory about same-sex relationships. The result was Star Trek's first same-sex kiss.
- 02Avery Brooks directed, and later called it his favourite of the episodes he directed.
- 03It drew more viewer response than any other DS9 episode. One station in the southern US cut the kiss. Phone calls were mostly negative, letters mostly positive.
