Jadzia prepares for the zhian'tara, a Trill rite in which the memories of a symbiont's previous hosts are placed temporarily in other people, so the current host can meet them face to face. Her friends volunteer: Kira becomes Lela, O'Brien the shy Tobin, Leeta the gymnast Emony, Quark the mother Audrid, and Bashir the daring pilot Torias. Sisko takes on Joran, the murderous host, who attacks Jadzia before Sisko regains control. Jadzia is most anxious about Curzon, who once had her thrown out of the initiate programme. Odo hosts him, and at first Curzon will not explain himself, leaving Jadzia devastated. When she confronts him, he admits he rejected her because he had fallen in love with her. Reassured that he remains part of her, Curzon departs. Meanwhile, Nog fails a Starfleet Academy entrance test until Rom discovers that Quark sabotaged it and threatens to burn down the bar. Nog retakes the test and passes.
- 01Writer René Echevarria wanted Keiko for the third female host, but Rosalind Chao was unavailable, so Leeta returned instead. Quark channelling a female host was played for comedy.
- 02To create Odo as Curzon, makeup designer Michael Westmore digitally morphed a photo of Frank Owen Smith, who played Curzon in “Emissary”, with Odo's makeup.
- 03Jadzia mentions Andrew Wiles's 1995 proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, a nod to The Next Generation's “The Royale”, where Picard called it unsolved.
