Cardassian scientists come to the station to help build a communications relay through the wormhole, a landmark joint project. Vedek Yarka warns Sisko that an ancient prophecy predicts “three vipers” will destroy the Celestial Temple. Sisko is sceptical, but Kira is torn between her faith and her duty to a commanding officer who is also the Emissary. When a third Cardassian, Dejar, unexpectedly joins the project, the parallels mount. In the Gamma Quadrant, a test of the relay pulls a comet towards the wormhole, and its silithium core threatens to seal the passage for good. O'Brien's modified phasers fail, and Gilora discovers that Dejar is an Obsidian Order agent sent to sabotage the joint project. The comet breaks into three fragments, and Sisko and Kira guide them through the wormhole in a shuttle. The silithium does not destroy the wormhole but opens a stable subspace link, and the prophecy proves true in a way nobody expected.
- 01Although David S. Cohen and Martin A. Winer kept sole credit, René Echevarria completely rewrote their script. Cohen said not a word of their dialogue survived.
- 02Tracy Scoggins, who plays Gilora, later starred in Babylon 5 as Captain Elizabeth Lochley.
- 03The original idea had Starfleet growing uneasy at Sisko being seen as a religious figure by Bajorans, and deciding to relieve him of his post.
