Exploring the Gamma Quadrant, the Defiant witnesses the planet Meridian materialise. Its people spend most of their existence as pure consciousness in another dimension, returning to normal space only briefly every sixty years. Dax falls in love with Deral, one of the inhabitants, and the crew help the Meridians try to stabilise their world. Since the small community cannot spare Deral, Dax decides to stay and shift with the planet. But as the shift begins, her body will not cross over, and her presence threatens to tear Meridian apart. O'Brien beams her back to the Defiant and the planet vanishes, leaving Dax alone with sixty years to wait. On the station, Quark builds a holosuite programme of Kira for a creepy customer, Tiron. Kira and Odo find out, and sabotage it so the hologram has Quark's head.
