On the rogue planet, Odo is welcomed by the shapeshifters, who explain that he was sent out as an infant to explore and then return. They treat Kira coldly as a solid. Meanwhile Sisko and Bashir are rescued by O'Brien and Dax and return to the station, where the Federation is negotiating a treaty with Borath, a Dominion representative. The Romulans are shut out, Admiral Nechayev dismisses Sisko's concerns, and after Jem'Hadar kill T'Rul Sisko leads a desperate mission with Garak, Dax, Bashir and O'Brien to collapse the wormhole. On the planet, Kira finds a locked door that hides Jem'Hadar. The truth emerges: the station events were a simulation run by Borath to test how far the Federation would bend, and Odo's people are the Founders themselves. Appalled, Odo demands his friends' release and leaves with them.
