A battered ship comes through the wormhole carrying the Skrreeans, refugees whose language at first defeats the universal translator. Once the problem is solved, their leader Haneek explains that her people have escaped conquerors linked to the Dominion and are searching for Kentanna, a homeland promised in their legends. Sisko offers help and many more Skrreean ships arrive, straining the station and stirring resentment, including a fight between Nog and Haneek's son Tumak. The Skrreeans become convinced that Bajor is Kentanna. Kira takes their request to the Bajoran government, but Bajor, struggling with famine, turns them down. Defiant, Tumak sets off for Bajor in an unsafe ship and is killed when it is fired on. The Skrreeans settle instead on Draylon II. As she leaves, Haneek tells Kira that her people were farmers and could have helped Bajor feed itself.
