Grand Nagus Zek, leader of the Ferengi business empire, holds a conference at Quark's and stuns everyone by naming Quark his successor. Soon afterwards Zek apparently dies. Suddenly the most important Ferengi in the galaxy, Quark revels in the role, holding court and handing out lucrative opportunities, but someone wants him dead. Zek's son Krax and Quark's own brother Rom plot to kill him and seize power. As they move in, Zek steps out alive: he faked his death to test whether Krax was ready to take over, and Krax has failed. Zek takes back his position and Quark returns to his bar. Meanwhile Sisko is uneasy about Jake spending so much time with Nog, especially after Rom pulls Nog out of Keiko's school. When Sisko finally follows the boys, he discovers that Jake has been secretly teaching Nog to read.
- 01The first appearances of Wallace Shawn as Zek and Tiny Ron as his bodyguard Maihar'du, and the introduction of the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition.
- 02Michael Piller suggested modelling the story on The Godfather, and Quark's audience scene deliberately echoes Marlon Brando's Don Corleone.
- 03Wallace Shawn's make-up took three hours to apply and one to remove, and he wore it for about twelve hours a day.
