Years after his wife Jennifer died when the Borg, led by the assimilated Picard, destroyed his ship at Wolf 359, Commander Benjamin Sisko arrives with his son Jake to run Deep Space Nine, left in ruins by the departing Cardassians. Sisko is close to resigning. Then Kai Opaka, Bajor's spiritual leader, shows him a sacred orb and calls him the Emissary, the one destined to find the Celestial Temple of the Prophets. With Lt Jadzia Dax, Sisko traces the orb's visions to the Denorios Belt and discovers a stable wormhole to the distant Gamma Quadrant. Inside, he meets aliens who live outside linear time, and in explaining human life to them he is forced to face the moment of Jennifer's death. Gul Dukat follows and is trapped when the aliens close the wormhole, leaving Major Kira to face angry Cardassian warships at the station. Sisko wins safe passage for ships, makes his peace with Picard and chooses to stay.
