Star Trek turned 60 on 8 September, and the celebrations have reached the cinema. The Sixty-Year Mission: How Star Trek Changed Television and the World is a feature-length documentary about how a 1960s television series became one of the most influential stories of its age, and it's showing at Cineworld Belfast on Wednesday 21 October at 7:30pm.

The film is written and directed by Mark A. Altman, co-author of the oral history The Fifty-Year Mission, with William Shatner as executive producer. It mixes archive footage with new interviews to tell the story of how the original series was made in 1966, including the creative struggles and personal clashes behind it, and how its ideas spread far beyond the screen. Altman calls it a love letter to Star Trek.

The interviews range right across the franchise. Alongside Shatner, you'll hear from Walter Koenig, George Takei, Rod Roddenberry, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Gates McFadden, Denise Crosby, Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor, Terry Farrell, Robert Picardo, Ethan Peck, Christina Chong and Simon Pegg, among many others.

It opened in American cinemas on 9 October, so this is a lovely chance to see it on a big screen here at home. Whether you grew up with Kirk and Spock or found Star Trek through Strange New Worlds, it should be a fine night out for any fan.
