Tom Paris creates Fair Haven, a holodeck recreation of a 19th-century Irish seaside village, and it quickly becomes popular with the crew. When Voyager must ride out a space storm for several days, Janeway keeps the programme running for morale. Spending time there herself, she grows close to Michael Sullivan, the village barkeeper. Embarrassed when his wife appears, she rewrites his character to suit her tastes and deletes the wife. Janeway, as Katie O'Clare, begins a romance with him, but she is uneasy, and talks it through with Chakotay and the Doctor. Can a captain have a relationship with a hologram she can edit at will? As the storm hits, the holodeck is threatened and the crew work to save the programme. Janeway decides it should survive, but she tells the computer to deny her access to Michael's character settings, and she steps away from him.
