Voyager answers a distress call and takes aboard an injured scorpion-like creature, which latches on to Torres and links with her nervous system. The Doctor lacks the knowledge of alien biology to separate them, so he and Kim create a hologram of Crell Moset, a famous Cardassian exobiologist. Moset is brilliant, and the two doctors make progress. Then Ensign Tabor, a Bajoran, recognises the name: Moset carried out deadly experiments on Bajorans during the Occupation, and his research is built on their suffering. When Torres learns this, she refuses treatment. Janeway overrules her to save her life, while a ship of the creature's species arrives and holds Voyager. The operation succeeds, the creature is returned to its people, and Torres survives but is angry at the choice made for her. Troubled by where the knowledge came from, the Doctor deletes Moset's program.

  2. 02Moset was inspired by the Nazi doctor Josef Mengele, and the idea began as an abandoned Deep Space Nine story.
  3. 03Director David Livingston kept the camera moving to enliven a dialogue-heavy script, and avoided lingering on the rubber creature prop.
