It is the Klingon Day of Honor, and B'Elanna Torres, who has always kept her heritage at arm's length, is having a dreadful day. Neelix persuades her to try the holodeck ritual after all, while Seven of Nine, eager for a real role aboard ship, is assigned to work with her in engineering. When an experiment with transwarp technology goes wrong, Torres is forced to eject the warp core. She and Paris set out in a shuttle to recover it, but the Caatati, desperate and energy-starved refugees, seize the core with a tractor beam. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Torres and Paris drifting in space in their suits as their air runs out. Back on Voyager, Seven offers to use her Borg knowledge to give the Caatati a way to make the thorium they need, and the core is handed back. With death seemingly moments away, Torres tells Paris that she loves him, just before they are rescued.
- 01The episode was inspired by Simon & Schuster's 1997 “Day of Honor” crossover book series.
- 02Roxann Dawson was about three months pregnant during filming, but the pregnancy was not written into this story.
- 03The spacesuits worn by Torres and Paris are the EVA suits from Star Trek: First Contact.
