Janeway and the Borg work together on nanoprobe weapons against Species 8472, and the Collective sends a drone, Seven of Nine, to speak for it. When bioships attack, the cube shields Voyager and is destroyed, and Janeway is gravely injured as she, Tuvok and several drones are beamed aboard. With Chakotay in command, the alliance falls apart: he refuses to take Voyager into Borg territory and plans to leave the drones on a moon with the research. Seven takes control of the deflector and opens a rift into fluidic space, home of Species 8472, which reaches out to the crew through Kes. Chakotay vents the cargo bay, but Seven survives. Janeway recovers, overrules Chakotay and resumes the alliance. Torpedoes armed with nanoprobes devastate the bioships, but Seven then tries to assimilate Voyager. Janeway's plan is ready: Chakotay links with Seven's mind while Torres cuts her off from the Collective. Voyager heads home with Seven unconscious aboard.
