Janeway and Neelix come back from three days of trading with the touchy Tak Tak to find Voyager adrift, its systems failing and no one answering. Aboard, Neelix is attacked by an unseen creature and vanishes, and Janeway discovers the crew collapsed in the mess hall with strange growths on their necks. The Doctor explains that he answered a distress call from a Garan mining colony struck by a virus, unaware that it could grow to enormous size. Samples carried back aboard have infected the crew and the ship's bio-neural systems, and now flying macroviruses roam the decks. Armed with a phaser rifle, Janeway fights her way through Jefferies tubes, works with the Doctor on an antigen, and stops the Tak Tak from destroying the ship as a plague vessel. She lures the creatures into the holodeck with false life signs and wipes them out. The crew recovers, and the cure is shared with the Tak Tak.
- 01Brannon Braga first imagined an episode with almost no dialogue, Janeway alone against the creatures, but exposition needs added talking scenes.
- 02The macroviruses were created entirely with CGI. Their success helped pave the way for the all-CGI Species 8472 in “Scorpion”.
- 03The Tak Tak's horror at hands on hips is a good-natured joke about Kate Mulgrew's habitual pose.
