Voyager is trying to build relations with the reclusive Drayans when Tuvok's shuttle crashes on one of their moons, killing Ensign Bennet. Tuvok finds three young Drayans, Tressa, Elani and Corin, who say they survived a crash of their own and are terrified of a creature they call the Morrok, and of the Drayans hunting the moon. Never comfortable with children, Tuvok becomes their guardian, even soothing Tressa with a Vulcan lullaby. Meanwhile Janeway tries to recover her officer without offending the Drayans, who regard the moon as sacred and resent the intrusion. When Elani and Corin disappear in the night, Tuvok fears they have been taken. The truth is unexpected: Drayans age in reverse. The “children” are elderly people who have come to the moon to die, as their custom demands. Tuvok chooses to stay with Tressa and comfort her as her life ends.
- 01The story came from Anthony Williams, who worked in advertising at Paramount. Lisa Klink built her teleplay around the idea of Tuvok as a father.
- 02Tim Russ sings a Vulcan lullaby written by Klink, which led to her induction into ASCAP.
- 03The Drayans are Star Trek's second species to age backwards, after the animated series episode “The Counter-Clock Incident”.
