A Kazon attack kills crewman Kurt Bendera, one of Chakotay's former Maquis comrades, and pressure grows on Janeway to stop standing alone and seek allies. She reluctantly reaches out to Maje Culluh and Seska, but talks collapse when Culluh refuses to deal with a woman. Neelix, meanwhile, learns of the Trabe, the people who once enslaved the Kazon until the Kazon rose up against them. Their leader, Mabus, seeks Voyager's friendship, and Janeway arranges a peace conference with the Kazon sects on the planet Sobras. But the Trabe use the summit to attack, hoping to wipe out the Kazon leadership in one blow. Janeway beams her people to safety and drives off the Trabe ship, but the furious majes leave convinced that Voyager betrayed them. Janeway ends the alliance and expels Mabus, resolved to hold to Federation principles. Meanwhile, Lt Michael Jonas secretly contacts the Kazon-Nistrim.
