Preparing for first contact with the Bothans, an overworked Janeway starts seeing characters from her holonovel outside the holodeck, and she is not the only one.

Janeway, exhausted as Voyager prepares to meet a Bothan envoy and negotiate passage through Bothan space, takes a break in her Gothic holonovel, but soon its characters begin appearing outside the holodeck. When the Bothan makes contact, the hallucinations spread through the crew, each person seeing someone close to their heart: Janeway her partner Mark, Paris his stern father, Kim his girlfriend Libby, Tuvok his wife T'Pel, and Torres a romantic encounter with Chakotay. One by one they fall into a catatonic state. Only the Doctor, a hologram, and Kes, whose telepathic training with Tuvok helps her fight back, remain unaffected. Following a plan Torres devised, the two send a pulse through the warp core that wakes the crew. Confronted, the Bothan gives no real reason for his attack beyond the fact that he could do it. He then vanishes along with his ships, suggesting he may never have been physically there at all.
- 01The first time Tuvok's wife is named, and Marva Hicks's first appearance as T'Pel. She returns in “Body and Soul”.
- 02Warren Munson is the first actor to play Admiral Owen Paris. Richard Herd later takes over the role, from “Pathfinder” onwards.
- 03The last appearance of Janeway's Gothic holonovel, whose mysteries are never resolved.
