Friction between Voyager's Starfleet and Maquis crews comes to a head after B'Elanna Torres assaults engineer Joe Carey. Chakotay nonetheless recommends her for chief engineer, and Janeway accepts that the two crews must be properly integrated. Then Voyager picks up a distress call from a ship caught near a quantum singularity. Trying to pull it free with a tractor beam only damages Voyager's systems, and the crew slowly realise that the trapped vessel is a reflection of their own ship: Voyager itself has crossed the singularity's event horizon. The way out is shrinking fast. Janeway and Torres take a shuttle and use its shields to widen the opening, but on the way back they are faced with two identical Voyagers and must work out which one is real. Janeway chooses correctly and the ship escapes. Torres is made chief engineer and apologises to Carey, who congratulates her and promises his support.
