The star Beta Niobe is about to go nova, and the Enterprise visits its planet, Sarpeidon, to warn the inhabitants. Kirk, Spock and McCoy find only Mr Atoz, a librarian, and his time portal, the atavachron. The population has escaped into the past. Hearing a scream, Kirk dashes through and lands in a period like 17th-century England, where he is arrested for witchcraft. Spock and McCoy follow and find themselves in an ice age 5,000 years earlier. They are saved by Zarabeth, a woman exiled there alone. Cut off in that distant era, Spock begins to revert to the emotions of his ancient Vulcan ancestors, and he falls in love with Zarabeth. Kirk escapes with help from a fellow time traveller and returns to the library. Spock and McCoy discover that they arrived together and must leave together. Spock says goodbye to Zarabeth, and the Enterprise escapes just as the star explodes.
