The Enterprise finds a planet that seems far too young to have its Earth-like atmosphere and plant life. As Kirk, McCoy, Sulu and geologist D'Amato beam down, a mysterious woman appears in the transporter room and kills the operator with a touch. At that moment the ship is thrown almost 1,000 light-years away, leaving the landing party stranded. The woman, Losira, keeps returning. She can kill only the person she names, and she claims D'Amato and, aboard the ship, engineer Watkins. She also sabotages the engines, and Spock and Scotty must stop the Enterprise racing towards destruction before they can return. On the planet she comes for Kirk, Sulu and McCoy. Spock beams down with a security guard and they destroy the computer generating her. A recording of the real Losira explains that the planet was an outpost of the Kalandans, who all died of disease. The computer had gone on defending it in her image.

DID YOU KNOW?

  1. 01D.C. Fontana's original outline, called “Survival”, featured a more brutal Losira who encouraged conflict among the crew.
  2. 02One of only a handful of original series episodes with no captain's log entry, and so no stardate.
  3. 03Lee Meriwether, who plays Losira, was Miss America 1955 and played Catwoman in the 1966 Batman film.
