McCoy learns he has xenopolycythemia, an incurable disease. Soon after, the Enterprise finds an asteroid heading for the populated planet Daran V, and it fires on the ship. Kirk, Spock and McCoy beam aboard and discover it is a hollow generation ship, Yonada, built by the Fabrini after their sun went supernova 10,000 years ago. Its people do not know they live on a ship. A computer they worship as the Oracle rules them through obedience devices implanted in their temples, and an old man who has climbed a mountain and touched the sky dies for saying so. McCoy falls in love with the high priestess Natira, marries her and accepts an implant. Kirk and Spock remove it, reach the control room behind the Oracle and correct Yonada's course. The Fabrini archives hold a cure for McCoy, who returns to the Enterprise, hoping to see Natira again when Yonada reaches its new world.
