Lt Norman, a new crew member who avoids his medical check, turns out to be an android. He takes over the ship and steers it to an uncharted planet populated by androids. Their ruler is Harry Mudd, the conman Kirk last met in “Mudd's Women”. Having escaped prison and crashed here, Mudd is pampered by the androids, who serve him in every way except letting him leave, and he hoped to trade the crew for his own freedom. The androids, however, plan to keep everyone and then go out to serve humanity, which in practice means controlling it. Several crew members are tempted by what the androids offer. Kirk realises that the androids are run by a central intelligence, Norman, and that illogic is their weakness. The crew bombard them with absurd behaviour and paradoxes until Norman shuts down. Kirk leaves Mudd on the planet, guarded by hundreds of android copies of his nagging wife, Stella.
- 01The first sequel episode in Star Trek, bringing back Roger C. Carmel's Harry Mudd from season one's “Mudd's Women”.
- 02David Gerrold rewrote the script without credit and declined a shared credit so that Stephen Kandel would keep the residuals.
- 03Identical twins played the androids to reduce the special effects shots needed. George Takei is absent because he was filming The Green Berets.
