The Enterprise is called to Starbase 11, where Kirk learns that his predecessor, Captain Christopher Pike, has been left paralysed and unable to speak after a radiation accident. He can answer only yes or no through a light on his wheelchair. Using faked orders and a falsified voice, Spock brings Pike aboard, takes control of the ship and sets course for Talos IV, a planet so forbidden that contact carries the death penalty. Kirk and Commodore Mendez give chase in a shuttlecraft and run short of fuel. Spock brings them aboard, then surrenders and is arrested. At his court martial, Spock asks to present evidence: images of the Enterprise's earlier visit to Talos IV under Pike's command. On the screen, Pike's landing party finds survivors of a crashed expedition, among them a young woman, Vina, before Pike is captured by large-headed aliens who can create illusions. Then Starfleet reveals that the images are being sent from Talos IV itself.
- 01Made to ease production delays, it reuses footage from the unaired first pilot “The Cage”, so the two-parter needed only about a week to shoot.
- 02Jeffrey Hunter appears as Pike in footage from “The Cage”. Sean Kenney plays the injured Pike, and Malachi Throne, who voiced the Keeper in the pilot, plays Mendez.
- 03John D.F. Black wrote the original framing story, but Roddenberry rewrote it and kept sole credit. The Writers Guild ruled in Roddenberry's favour.
