The Enterprise finds a planet almost identical to Earth and beams down a party including Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Rand. The cities are ruined, and the only people left are children, who call themselves the Onlies and call adults Grups. A teenage girl, Miri, attaches herself to Kirk. The crew learn that, centuries ago, a life-extension experiment created a plague that kills adults but hugely slows ageing in the young. When children reach puberty they sicken, turn violent and die. Soon the humans in the party show the same lesions and have only days to live. McCoy races to make a vaccine, but Jahn, leader of the Onlies, steals their communicators, cutting them off from the ship's computer, and the children seize Rand. Kirk persuades them that the adults want to help, and the communicators are returned. McCoy tests the vaccine on himself and it works. Kirk arranges for people to be sent to care for and teach the children.
