Lana and Sentek's bid to seize the bridge is stopped by Lieutenant Smith, whose own latent Esper abilities have surfaced years after her brush with Gary Mitchell. Kirk confines her to sickbay as a precaution, and the pair retreat to the Kongo, whose crew the Espers have killed. Even with the Romulans alongside, the Enterprise is outmatched, and Kirk's three-pronged attack, made possible by separating the saucer, fails. Spock, tormented by visions planted by the Espers, agrees to trade Dr McKennah for the Kongo's supposedly captive crew, only to learn the hostages were an illusion. The Kongo sets course for Earth, tricking two more starships into destroying each other along the way. Smith volunteers to beam aboard and wrecks the Kongo's engines at the cost of her life, and a Romulan plasma torpedo helps finish the ship before it explodes. McKennah's transporter signal cannot be recovered, and her friends say goodbye as her pattern fades. With the fleet in ruins, Fleet Admiral Nogura announces that the Enterprise will be rebuilt and offers Kirk promotion to admiral. Kirk, carrying the memory of every crew member he has lost, accepts. McCoy resigns, Spock leaves for Vulcan, and the three friends agree to meet for dinner as the ship waits in drydock, ready for The Motion Picture.
