Undercover among the mercenaries, Picard and Riker close in on what Baran is really after, while Data and Worf struggle to run the Enterprise.
Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Picard and Riker continue their deception aboard Baran's ship, while Data commands the Enterprise with Worf as his first officer, a pairing that leads to friction between friends. Picard works out that the artefacts Baran is collecting are not Romulan, as claimed, but pieces of the Stone of Gol, an ancient Vulcan telepathic weapon. Its buyers are Vulcan isolationists, who want their world to leave the Federation. Once the stone is assembled, it seems unstoppable, but Picard realises its secret: it can only harm those with violent thoughts. That is why the Vulcans, having turned to logic and peace two thousand years earlier, had no use for it. Using that knowledge, Picard defeats the isolationists. The Vulcan government promises to destroy every piece of the weapon. Back on the Enterprise, Picard jokes that Riker should be thrown in the brig for defecting, and the literal-minded Data leads a protesting Riker away.
- 01Writer Ronald D. Moore named the Stone of Gol after the plateau in Star Trek: The Motion Picture where Spock attempted Kolinahr.
- 02The episode formally established Vulcan as one of the Federation's founding worlds.
- 03Basketball star James Worthy, a keen Star Trek fan, plays the Klingon mercenary Koral.
