Relieved of duty, Dr Crusher explains to Guinan how it happened. She invited several scientists to the Enterprise to examine Dr Reyga's metaphasic shield, a Ferengi invention meant to let a ship survive inside a star. During a test flight, the Takaran pilot Jo'Bril dies inside the shuttle. When Reyga himself is then found dead, Crusher is convinced someone is sabotaging his work. Against orders, she performs an autopsy on Reyga, and is relieved of duty. Encouraged by Guinan, she takes the shuttle into the star herself. Jo'Bril is waiting: his species can simulate death, and he was the saboteur all along, planning to steal the shield and turn it into a weapon. After a desperate struggle on the shuttle, Crusher kills him and returns vindicated. Guinan then confesses that she invented her own complaint to get Crusher talking.
