Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Responding to a distress signal, the Enterprise discovers an enormous Dyson sphere and, crashed on its outer surface, the USS Jenolan, a transport missing for 75 years. The away team finds that the ship's transporter was rigged to hold two people in the buffer indefinitely. One pattern has degraded, but Geordi recovers the other: retired Captain Montgomery Scott. Scotty is thrilled to be alive, but he soon finds his knowledge out of date and his help unwanted in engineering. Alone, he recreates the bridge of his old Enterprise on the holodeck, where Picard joins him for a drink and some encouragement. When the Enterprise is drawn inside the sphere and trapped, Scotty and Geordi get the Jenolan flying and wedge it in the closing hatch. The Enterprise escapes, destroys the old ship and beams the two engineers aboard. Picard then lends Scotty a shuttlecraft so he can carry on exploring.
- 01The holodeck bridge mixes blue screen footage from the original series episode “This Side of Paradise” with a newly built section featuring a fan-built command chair and helm console.
- 02The Jenolan was a modified shuttle model built by ILM for Star Trek VI, which later became the basis for the runabouts of Deep Space Nine.
- 03Physicist Freeman Dyson called the science behind the episode nonsense, but said he enjoyed it as television.
