Lwaxana Troi arrives to marry a man she has never met, and soon becomes an unlikely ally to Alexander, while something is quietly eating away at the Enterprise.
Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Lwaxana Troi comes aboard to marry Minister Campio, a match arranged by computer, much to Deanna's dismay. Meanwhile Worf is struggling to make Alexander follow rules, and Lwaxana takes the boy under her wing, encouraging his playful side and taking him to a holodeck colony full of eccentric characters and a soothing mud bath. Campio, stiff and devoted to protocol, is dismayed by Lwaxana's free spirit. At the same time the ship is being damaged by microscopic parasites that feed on nitrium, carried aboard from an asteroid the Enterprise destroyed. As systems begin to fail, Data steers the ship to a nitrium-rich asteroid and the creatures leave to feed there. On her wedding day, Lwaxana follows Betazoid tradition and arrives naked, which drives Campio away. Afterwards she relaxes in the holodeck mud bath with Deanna and Alexander, admits that she was wrong to try to marry a man she did not love, and thanks Alexander.
- 01Won two Emmy Awards, for costume design and for makeup.
- 02Director Winrich Kolbe said of the episode: “I suddenly had to direct comedy.”
- 03Writer Peter Allan Fields felt the nitrium parasite subplot was something the episode needed rather than an intrinsic part of the story.
