An unknown alien ship scans the Enterprise, and every crew member loses all memory of who they are, while keeping their skills. The ship's records identify a stranger, Commander Kieran MacDuff, as first officer, and state that the Federation is at war with the Lysian Alliance and that their mission is to destroy the Lysian central command. Unsure of themselves, the crew rebuild their chain of command. Riker and Ro, unaware of their past friction, become lovers, while Picard and Data wonder why a Federation ship would be sent on such a mission. When the Enterprise easily destroys a Lysian ship, Picard realises the enemy is far weaker than the Enterprise and refuses to finish the attack. MacDuff tries to take control and is overpowered by Riker and Worf. He is revealed as a Satarran, who altered the ship's records to use the Enterprise against his people's enemies. Crusher restores everyone's memories, and Picard apologises to the Lysians.
