The Enterprise carries a delegation of Ullians, telepathic historians who help people retrieve long-forgotten memories. Their leader Tarmin travels with his son Jev, who feels overshadowed by him. After a conversation with Jev, Troi relives a memory of an intimate moment with Riker that twists into an assault, and she collapses into a coma. Soon Riker and Dr Crusher are struck down in the same way, each after a painful memory is forced to the surface, Crusher's involving the death of her husband Jack. The comas are diagnosed as Iresine Syndrome, but suspicion falls on the Ullians. Jev probes Troi's memory and tells the crew that his father is responsible. However, Data's research uncovers earlier cases linked to the delegation's travels, including some when Tarmin was absent and Jev was not. Jev is exposed as the attacker and taken into custody, and the Enterprise sets course for the Ullian homeworld as Riker and Crusher recover.
