Helena Rozhenko, Worf's human foster mother, arrives aboard the Enterprise with Alexander, explaining that she and her husband Sergey are too old to raise the boy and that he needs his father. Worf, unprepared for parenthood, enrols Alexander in the ship's school, but the boy is soon lying, bullying classmates and stealing. Frustrated, Worf considers sending him to a Klingon school, until Troi suggests the behaviour comes from Alexander feeling abandoned. Meanwhile the Enterprise is monitoring a test of soliton wave technology, a possible alternative to warp drive. The wave grows out of control, damaging the ship and threatening a colony on Lemma II. During the crisis a fire breaks out in a laboratory where Alexander has gone, and he is trapped beneath debris. Worf and Riker rescue him moments before the Enterprise dissipates the wave with photon torpedoes. Alexander recovers, and Worf asks his son to stay with him aboard the Enterprise.
