The Enterprise is struck by a quantum filament, losing power and communications and splitting the crew into isolated groups. On the bridge, Troi is the senior officer and must take command, with O'Brien and an outspoken Ro beside her, as antimatter containment begins to fail. Ro urges her to separate the saucer, but Troi chooses to send power to engineering in the hope that someone there can act. Riker and Data climb through the Jefferies tubes to reach it. To get past a deadly power surge, Riker carries Data's detached head ahead so it can be wired into the controls and stabilise containment. Picard, nursing a broken ankle, leads three frightened children from the science fair out of a stalled turbolift by making them his crew. In a cargo bay, Crusher and La Forge vent the air to put out a plasma fire, and in Ten Forward Worf delivers Keiko O'Brien's baby. Power returns, and the crew are reunited.
