While the Enterprise hosts an archaeology conference at which Picard is to give the keynote address, Vash, the treasure-hunting archaeologist he fell for on Risa, arrives unannounced. Their reunion turns sour when she discovers he has never mentioned her to his crew. Then Q appears, determined to repay a debt to Picard. Spotting the captain's weak point, he plunges the senior staff into the legend of Robin Hood: Picard is Robin, his officers are the Merry Men, and Vash is Maid Marian, held in Nottingham Castle by Sir Guy of Gisbourne and sentenced to death. Q makes it clear that the danger is real. Picard slips into the castle in disguise, and his crew storm in to rescue Marian. Picard defeats Sir Guy in a swordfight, and Q returns everyone to the ship. Vash, in no hurry to settle down, leaves to explore the galaxy with Q, and Picard considers the debt paid.
- 01Worf's protest, “I am not a merry man!”, became one of the character's best-loved lines.
- 02Patrick Stewart said the production probably gave the cast more fun as a group than any other episode.
- 03Vash's story continues in Deep Space Nine's “Q-Less”, in which she arrives on the station after travelling with Q.
