Overdue a rest, Picard is pushed by his crew into taking shore leave on Risa. His plans to read in peace collapse almost at once when a woman named Vash kisses him to escape the attentions of a Ferengi, Sovak. Then two Vorgons, who claim to come from the 27th century, ask for his help finding the Tox Uthat, a weapon able to stop the fusion reactions inside a star. Vash says she has a record pointing to where the Uthat is hidden, and Picard, intrigued by her, joins the search. They dig at the site and find nothing, and Sovak, convinced they are hiding it, is unconvinced. Picard eventually realises that Vash found the Uthat days earlier and has been playing everyone. When the Vorgons come to claim it, Picard has the Enterprise destroy it with the transporter, which, the Vorgons admit, is exactly what their history records. Vash and Picard share a last tender moment before parting.
