Answering a distress signal from Galorndon Core, a planet near the Neutral Zone battered by violent storms, an away team finds a crashed Romulan craft and an injured survivor, who is taken back to the Enterprise. La Forge is separated from the team and left behind. He soon meets a second Romulan, Bochra, and they begin as bitter enemies. But the storms are attacking both men's nervous systems, and they must pool their skills and equipment to signal a probe from the ship. Aboard the Enterprise, the only compatible donor for the dying Romulan is Worf, whose parents were killed by Romulans. Worf refuses, even when Picard asks, and the Romulan dies. Meanwhile Commander Tomalak's warbird arrives, accusing the Federation of breaking the treaty, and the stand-off threatens to become war. When La Forge and Bochra are beamed up together, Bochra's account persuades Tomalak to stand down.
- 01Andreas Katsulas debuts as Romulan commander Tomalak, the first of four appearances. He later found fame on Babylon 5.
- 02David Carson's first TNG episode as director. He went on to direct the film Star Trek Generations.
- 03Michael Dorn initially felt Worf should donate, but the producers saw the refusal as showing his alien nature. Dorn later came round.
