Red alert: the full plot, ending included. Haven't watched yet?REVEAL SYNOPSIS
Riker is offered command of the USS Aries, a posting that would take him deep into unexplored space. Starfleet's civilian adviser Kyle Riker comes aboard to brief him, and he is Will's estranged father. Their attempts at conversation quickly turn into old arguments, and Kyle's past friendship with Dr Pulaski only adds to the awkwardness. Meanwhile Worf's short temper worries his crewmates. Wesley discovers it is the tenth anniversary of Worf's Age of Ascension, a Klingon rite he has no way of marking so far from home. With Data, La Forge and O'Brien, Wesley recreates the ceremony on the holodeck, and Worf passes through a gauntlet of warriors armed with painstiks. Will and Kyle finally have it out in a bruising anbo-jyutsu match, during which Will discovers his father cheated in their bouts when he was a boy. The two are reconciled at last, and Riker decides to turn down the Aries and stay aboard the Enterprise.
- 01Musician and TV host John Tesh appears uncredited as a holographic Klingon in Worf's ceremony. He had volunteered for any part months earlier.
- 02The Aries is the second command Riker turns down, after the USS Drake in “The Arsenal of Freedom”.
- 03For its first UK broadcast in 1991, in a 6pm family slot, the painstik ritual was heavily cut. It was restored for later showings.
