The Enterprise is surveying the Delta Triangle, a region where hundreds of ships have disappeared, when it runs into Klingons commanded by Kor. Caught in an ion storm, the Enterprise and Kor's battlecruiser, the Klothos, are both drawn into a pocket of space where time stands still, crowded with the wrecks of lost vessels. The descendants of their crews have formed a society, the Elysian Council, which forbids violence and insists that escape is impossible. Kirk soon learns that the Enterprise's dilithium crystals are breaking down and will fail within days. Spock proposes linking the two ships' engines to generate enough power to break free, and Kirk agrees to work with the Klingons. The Klingons secretly plan to destroy the Enterprise once they are clear, but the council's telepath, Magen, uncovers the plot. Spock and Scotty neutralise the hidden explosives, both ships escape, and Kor claims the credit for himself.
- 01John Colicos, who played Kor in live action, was unavailable, so James Doohan voiced him. It is the only time Kor was not played by Colicos.
- 02Kor mentions commanding the Klothos in Deep Space Nine's “Once More Unto the Breach”, a rare live-action nod to the animated series.
- 03Among the wrecks is the Bonaventure, described as the first ship with warp drive. It never appeared in live-action Star Trek.
