Tomorrow's Enterprise

While the Enterprise studies a rare white hole, Uhura hears strange sounds, including what seems to be Scotty screaming, though he is unharmed. She finds she is in contact with her future self, a year ahead and serving under Captain Kirk. In that future, Scotty died in a shuttle incident that nobody else seems to remember. Communicating across the anomaly, and at one point swapping ships, the two Uhuras work to stabilise it and save him. They discover the phenomenon is not natural: it is a sentient lifeform in a difficult birth, watched over by beings called the Midwives. Entering the phenomenon together, the Uhuras reposition the newborn, and a voice tells them only they will remember what happened. Time resets. On Kirk's Enterprise, Scotty and Ortegas are alive, the future Uhura kisses Scotty, and both Uhuras celebrate with their crews, resolved to live in the present.
